En 1990, alors que son train était retardé, elle a imaginé et commencé l'écriture de ce qui allait devenir une œuvre de sept livres dont le premier tome, Harry Potter à l'école des sorciers, a été publié au Royaume-Uni en 1997. Dix ans plus tard, en 2007, l'histoire se terminait avec la publication de Harry Potter et les Reliques de la Mort.  Pour compléter la saga, J.K. Rowling a également signé trois courts volumes au profit d'organisations caritatives: Le Quidditch à travers les âges, Les animaux fantastiques: vie et habitat et Les contes de Beedle le Barde. Elle a aussi co-écrit le texte de la pièce de théâtre Harry Potter et l'enfant maudit, où l'on retrouve son héros devenu adulte. On lui doit d'autres ouvrages pour la jeunesse, L'Ickabog et Jack et la grande aventure du cochon de Noël, publiés respectivement en 2020 et 2021, tous deux des best-sellers, ainsi que des romans pour adultes, dont une série d'enquêtes policières à succès. J.K. Rowling a reçu de nombreux prix et distinctions pour l'ensemble de son œuvre.
