Issu d'une famille de mineurs, D.H. Lawrence naît en 1885 à Eastwood, dans le Nottinghamshire. Après l'interdiction par la censure de L'arc-en-ciel (1915), il quitte l'Angleterre, espérant échapper ainsi au conformisme britannique. En 1914 il épouse Frieda von Richthofen, et le couple fait un long voyage en Australie, au Mexique et au Nouveau-Mexique. De retour en Europe, Lawrence reprend ses voyages, de ville en ville, et écrit successivement Lady Chatterley et l'homme des bois , puis sa version définitive. L'amant de Lady Chatterley , dont la publication ne sera autorisée en Angleterre qu'en 1960. Il est mort à Vence en 1930.
