This particular find fascinated me. It had apparently been meant originally for an account or memorandum book, having only blank, imprinted pages — some three hundred or more, I guess. However, nearly all of them were covered from margin to margin with minute little faded squiggled; I recognized them as a Renaissance script, though a poorly formed one. The writer apparently had been a man of little schooling, though obviously possessed of a great desire to write. No one, not even a specialist, reads 15th or 16thCentury Spanish scripts with ease, especially squatting in an attic with only a dim flashlight for illumination; however I could make out enough of the cramped, jammed-together writing to decide that the book was a journal or a chronicle of some sort. It appeared to be a record or diary of a journey through some part of the New World, America, not long after it was discovered by Columbus.
