"The Secret Garden" is a classic children's novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, first published in 1911. The story follows Mary Lennox, a neglected and unloved 10-year-old girl, who is sent to live with her uncle in England after her parents die. She discovers a secret garden on the estate and befriends a maid, a gardener, and a robin redbreast. She also meets her cousin Colin, who is confined to his bed due to an unspecified spinal problem. Mary helps Colin to recover and they keep his progress a secret from the other staff to surprise his father. The novel has been analyzed for its themes of affective discipline, disability, gender, class, and imperialism. It has been adapted into various stage plays, films, and an anime series. The novel has been well-received by critics and readers alike and is considered a classic of English children's literature.
