"The Time Machine" is a novella by H.G. Wells that popularized the concept of time travel. It is interpreted as a commentary on the increasing inequality and class divisions of Wells' era. The novella has been praised for its handling of thematic concerns and has indirectly inspired many more works of fiction. Wells was paid £100 for the publication of the novella by Heinemann in 1895. The story follows the Time Traveller, who discovers that the human race has evolved into two species: the Eloi and the Morlocks. The Time Traveller theorizes that intelligence is the result of and response to danger. The novella has been adapted into several films, radio dramas, and comic books. There have also been several sequels and spin-offs of the novella.
