"The Professor" is the first novel written by Charlotte Brontë, although it was published posthumously in 1857. The story follows the life of William Crimsworth, a young man who becomes a teacher in Brussels. The novel begins with William rejecting his uncle's proposal to become a clergyman and his encounter with his wealthy brother Edward, who treats him poorly. William eventually finds work at a boys' boarding school, where he is noticed by the headmistress of a neighboring girls' school, Mademoiselle Reuter. Initially infatuated with her, William discovers her deceitful nature and falls in love with one of her young teachers, Frances. Jealous of their relationship, Mademoiselle Reuter dismisses Frances, but William eventually finds her again and they marry. The novel explores themes of religion and the author's own experiences in Brussels.
