"The Sea-Wolf" is a psychological adventure novel written by Jack London in 1904. The story follows Humphrey Van Weyden, a literary critic who survives an ocean collision and is rescued by the powerful and amoral sea captain, Wolf Larsen. The book sold out before publication due to the success of London's previous work, "The Call of the Wild." The character of Wolf Larsen was based on a real sailor named Captain Alex MacLean. The novel explores themes of Nietzsche's super-man philosophy and references various philosophers and writers. The plot revolves around Van Weyden's transformation from a weak intellectual to a tough and self-reliant individual. The story includes elements of mutiny, romance, and survival as Van Weyden and Larsen's relationship evolves. The novel ends with their rescue and a kiss between Van Weyden and a woman named Maud Brewster. Overall, "The Sea-Wolf" delves into the complexities of human nature and the struggle for survival in a harsh environment.

    Il exerce de nombreux métiers pour survivre : marin (jusqu’au Japon et en Sibérie), blanchisseur, ouvrier dans une conserverie de saumon, pilleur d’huîtres, chasseur de phoques, employé dans une fabrique de jute… Après avoir participé à une marche de chômeurs versWashington, il adhère au socialisme. Devenu vagabond, il est arrêté fin 1894 et passe un mois dans un pénitencier. En 1897, il participe à la ruée vers l’or du Klondike. Atteint du scorbut, il est rapatrié. C’est le début de sa prolifique carrière d’écrivain. À sa mort en 1916, des suites d’un empoisonnement du sang, il laisse quelque cinquante livres, parmi lesquels L’Appel de la forêt (1903), Croc-Blanc (1906) et Martin Eden (1909).
