André Lachance, historien, a fait son doctorat à l'Université d'Ottawa avec le professeur Marcel Trudel. Maintenant à la retraite, il a enseigné l'histoire du Canada et de la Nouvelle-France à l'Université Laval de 1966 à 1968, puis à l'Université de Sherbrooke de 1968 à 1998. Il a été membre de la Commission des biens culturels de 1975 à 1978 et membre du comité de la Revue d'histoire de l'Amérique française dans les années 1990. Au début des années 2000, il fut conseiller scientifique et participa à la série télévisée Origines, au canal Historia. À Québec, au cours de l'été 2003, les organisateurs des fêtes de la Nouvelle-France ont abondamment utilisé ses ouvrages, en particulier Juger et punir en Nouvelle-France, pour développer le thème central de ces fêtes : la justice.
