Margaret Mitchell (1900-1949) est née à Atlanta, Géorgie, dans une famille sudiste. Tout au long de son enfance, elle écrit des nouvelles et des pièces de théâtre. En 1922, elle commence à travailler pour l’Atlanta Journal. En 1926, quand elle se casse la cheville, elle se met à écrire un roman inspiré par l’histoire de ses ancêtres qui l’a profondément marquée : Autant en emporte le vent, couronné par le prix Pulitzer en 1937, sera traduit en plus de 27 langues, avec plus de 30 millions d’exemplaires vendus. Malgré son énorme succès, il reste la seule oeuvre de la romancière.
