Apart from his non-fiction he wrote dozens of novels and short stories earning him the name the ‘American Kipling’. His most famous works include "Marion’s Faith," "The Colonel’s Daughter," "Campaigning with Crook," "Fort Frayne," "Under Fire" and "Daughter of the Sioux."

Expert en géopolitique du Moyen-Orient, il écrit régulièrement pour le New York Times, le Washington Post et Foreign Affairs. Son nouveau livre, La Réinvention de l’humanité, a été récompensé par le Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, qui honore chaque année des ouvrages apportant une contribution majeure à la compréhension du racisme et à l'appréciation de la diversité.
