A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he can be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that had no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounter with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains...

  • Maurice Maeterlinck (auteur)

    Écrivain belge d'expression française, Maurice Maeterlinck est né à Gand (Flandre orientale) le 29 août 1862. Il prend part au mouvement symboliste et publie de nombreux romans, drames et poésies avant d'écrire, à partir de 1896, sur la destinée humaine (Le Trésor des humblesLa Sagesse et la Destinée) et sur la vie des animaux (La Vie des abeilles). Devenu célèbre et riche, il vient vivre en France. En 1911, il obtient le prix Nobel de Littérature pour l'ensemble de son oeuvre. Son livre intitulé La Mort (1913), où il traite de la vie et de la mort d'un point de vue nettement contraire à la dogmatique catholique, lui vaut en 1914 la mise à l'Index de ses oeuvres. Il meurt le 5 mai 1949 dans sa grande propriété «Orlamonde» de Nice.
