Après de brèves études, et après avoir été tour à tour éleveur de saumons, représentant en machines-outils et cosmétiques, acteur pour le théâtre à Londres, il s'est lui-même déclaré « sauvé par la lecture », après avoir mis en chantier, en 1991, une série de cinq romans consacrés aux frères Ludlow. Quand paraît Une chance du diable, premier volet de cet ensemble, la critique le salue comme l'égal d'Alexander Kent et Patrick O'Brien, tout en lui reconnaissant un sens de l'intrigue digne des meilleurs maîtres du roman noir.
