Peter Brown, né à Dublin en 1935, fait ses études à Oxford avant d'y devenir professeur d'histoire de l'Antiquité tardive. Sa carrière universitaire le conduit ensuite à Londre puis, aux États-Unis, à Berkeley et enfin Princeton. Il est l'auteur de nombreux ouvrages dont : La vie de saint Augustin (1967, 2000), Le Seuil, 2001 (traduction de Jeanne Marrou) ; Genèse de l'Antiquité tardive, Gallimard, 1983 ; La société et le sacré dans l'Antiquité, Le Seuil, 1985 ; Le renoncement de la chair.
