A prolific writer, Curwood was a hugely successful and popular author, and his stories have been adapted for TV and film on multiple occasions. His other works of note include ‘The Danger Trail’, ‘The Flower of the North’, ‘Nomads of the North’, ‘The River's End’, and ‘Baree, Son of Kazan’.

Né en 1878 dans le Michigan, James Oliver Curwood est d’abord journaliste avant de démissionner pour se consacrer à l’écriture. Il voyage dans le Grand Nord, où il vit comme un trappeur et qu’il explore même pour le compte du gouvernement canadien. Il publie près de trente romans d’aventure et de nature, dont Kazan (1914), Le Grizzly (1916) et Bari chien-loup (1917), qui rencontrent un immense succès et fait de Curwood l’un des auteurs les mieux payés de son temps. Il meurt stupidement en 1927, piqué (a priori par une araignée) à travers sa botte lors d’une expédition de pêche.
