Don Ignatio and the Englishman, James Strickland, set out on a dangerous and exciting journey in search of the last lost Mayan city in Mexico. Il puise dans ce vécu africain pour Les Mines du roi Salomon (1885) qui fut un immense succès. Son personnage d'Allan Quatermain poursuit avec le même bonheur ses aventures fantastiques, avant de se réincarner une demi-douzaine de fois au cinéma.
