Louisa May Alcott naît en 1832 en Pennsylvanie et meurt à Boston en 1888. À l'âge de 16 ans, elle écrit son premier livre, un recueil de poèmes. Mais c'est le théâtre qui l'attire : elle veut devenir actrice et écrit plusieurs comédies. Elle fait paraître des poèmes et des nouvelles dans un journal. Pendant la guerre civile, elle sert comme infirmière. Elle se rend ensuite en Europe où elle dirige un journal pour enfants.
