Enfant de la haute société anglaise, Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) évolue très jeune dans les milieux intellectuels londoniens où elle fréquente de nombreux artistes comme Henry James et James Russell Lowell. Elle est l’une des figures emblématiques du cercle de Bloomsbury, auquel appartient également l’écrivain Leonard Woolf, qu’elle épousera en 1912. Ils fondent ensemble Hogarth Press, qui publiera la plupart des œuvres de Virginia Woolf. En 1915 paraît son premier roman, La Traversée des apparences ( The Voyage Out ). D’autres suivront, parmi lesquels Mrs Dalloway en 1925, Vers le phare ( To the Lighthouse ) en 1927 , Orlando en 1928 et Les Vagues ( The Waves ) en 1931. Auteur de nombreux romans, articles et essais, exploratrice de la langue anglaise et de ses sensations, Virginia Woolf est l’une des plus grandes romancières et figures féministes du xx e siècle. Son influence littéraire est considérable et ne cesse de croître. Elle inspire encore aujourd’hui de nombreux artistes et reste un sujet d’étude et de fascination, dans les domaines de la littérature et de la psychanalyse.
