Edgar Allan Poe (1809 – 1849) est un écrivain américain, poète, romancier et nouvelliste du XIXe siècle. On lui doit les Aventures d'Arthur Gordon Pym et les Histoires extraordinaires. Ses œuvres, traduites en France par Baudelaire, remportent un succès retentissant dans le pays et en influencent grandement la littérature.

Ambrose Bierce (1842-1913) est un écrivain américain. Combattant de la guerre de Sécession du côté de l’Union, il est blessé et quitte l’armée pour entreprendre une carrière de journaliste et d’écrivain. Brillant, cruel et imagé, il est l’un des maîtres de la nouvelle américaine.

Née en 1860, Charlotte Perkins Gilman fut une des pionnières du mouvement féministe américain. Ses vues sur la folie, la création et la condition féminine ont souvent été rapprochées de celles de Virginia Woolf. Partisane du droit à la mort digne, et atteinte d'un cancer, elle se suicida en 1935.

Nikolay Gogol, the author of the first great Russian novel of the 19th century, Dead Souls, as well as two classic plays and some of the finest short stories written in any language, was a true literary oddity. His peculiar, unhappy life and his uniquely dark comic sensibility have been consistently misunderstood by posterity, with critics fiercely debating his nationality, his religious beliefs, and even his sexuality. What has never been in doubt, however, is his immense literary talent which, while essentially sui generis, provided a template for the absurdist, surreal streak in Russian literature that continues to bear fruit to this day. Along with Alexander Pushkin, he also established a literary pattern for the depiction of St. Petersburg as a city of ambiguity and even monstrosity, life in which proves untenable for many of his long-suffering protagonists.Nikolay Vasilievich Gogol was born in Sorochyntsi, a Ukrainian Cossack village in what is now Ukraine's Poltava Oblast. His family were from the lower ranks of the gentry, his mother of Polish descent and his father a Ukrainian Cossack who wrote poetry and drama in Ukrainian. The family spoke both Ukrainian and Russian at home, and Gogol would later make a conscious choice to pursue a literary career in Russian rather than Ukrainian. He was educated at the Gymnasium of Higher Sciences in Nezhyn, a school founded as part of Alexander I's education reforms.

(1804-1864). Nathaniel Hawthorne est l'un des principaux écrivains américains de la première partie du XIXe siècle, aux côtés de son ami Herman Melville, l'auteur de Moby Dick. Si son oeuvre la plus connue est un roman tragique, La lettre écarlate, les récits du Livre des Merveilles, vivants, amusants, n'ont pas pris une ride.

Franz Kafka, né à Prague le 3 juillet 1883 d'une famille juive, a fait ses études au lycée allemand de Prague de 1893 à 1901, puis à l'Université allemande. En 1907 il entre dans une compagnie d'assurances. Son expérience professionnelle jouera un rôle capital dans la vision du monde social que son œuvre reflète avec la plus extrême précision. En 1912 il rencontre Felice Bauer, avec qui il se fiance deux fois et rompt définitivement en 1917. C'est l'année où sa tuberculose pulmonaire est diagnostiquée. En 1923, au cours de vacances au bord de la Baltique, il fait la connaissance de Dora Dymant et s'installe avec elle à Berlin. Atteint de laryngite tuberculeuse, il est transporté, après deux séjours dans des hôpitaux de Vienne, au sanatorium de Kierling, où il meurt le 3 juin 1924.
