"Tom Grogan" is a novel written by Francis Hopkinson Smith and published in 1896. It became the bestselling book in the United States that year. The story revolves around Tom Grogan, a stevedore who dies from an injury, leaving his widow to take over his name and business. She faces opposition from rival stevedores and labor union delegates who are jealous of her success. The novel portrays her resilience and determination in the face of blackmail, arson, and attempted murder. The book was serialized in The Century Magazine and later published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. It received positive reviews and was praised for its portrayal of a strong female protagonist. The novel was adapted into a play in 1896, and an art print of the book cover is held in the Library of Congress.
