"The Lost Stradivarius" is a horror novel written by J. Meade Falkner in 1895. The story revolves around a wealthy young heir who discovers a hidden compartment containing a Stradivarius violin in his college rooms. As he becomes increasingly secretive, he becomes obsessed with a particular piece of music that seems to summon the ghost of the violin's previous owner. The protagonist's journey takes him from England to Italy, exploring themes of family love, depravity, and the tragedy of obsession. The novel is known for its serious tone, characteristic of late Victorian literature. It has been compared to the ghost stories of M. R. James and is considered a psychic romance. The story was adapted for television in 1966 but all known copies of the episode were destroyed, leaving only a low-quality audio recording. In 2008, a radio reading of the novel was broadcast on BBC Radio 7.
