D. H. Lawrence's critique of Moby-Dick: Lawrence's opinions earned him many enemies and he endured official persecution, censorship, and misrepresentation of his creative work throughout the second half of his life, much of which he spent in a voluntary exile which he called his "savage pilgrimage." Lawrence is now valued by many as a visionary thinker and significant representative of modernism in English literature. In his Studies in Classic American Literature, D. H. Lawrence reads Moby Dick as a peculiarly American work. The Pequod, containing "many races, many peoples, many nations, under the Stars and Stripes," is the ship of America's soul; it can be no accident that the ship is governed by a mad captain embarked upon a fanatic's hunt. Moby Dick is the "deepest blood-being of the white race," hunted by the "maniacal fanaticism of our white mental consciousness."

Herman Melville est né en 1819 à New York dans une famille d'origine anglaise et hollandaise. À 19 ans, laissant son métier d'instituteur, il fit comme matelot la traversée de l'Océan jusqu'à Liverpool, puis s'embarqua sur une baleinière des mers du Sud. Il ne perdit jamais contact avec les marins. Les voyages divers fourniront à Melville la partie essentielle de son œuvre autobiographique, Typee, Omoo, Redburn, Mardi, La Vareuse blanche. En 1850, réfugié dans sa ferme solitaire, il écrit Moby Dick qui lui apportera la gloire posthume après la Première Guerre mondiale. Quelque temps avant de mourir il complète le manuscrit de Billy Budd, gabier de misaine qui sera publié en 1924. Il meurt à New York en 1891.

Écrivain anglais, David Herbert Lawrence, auteur du célèbre roman L'Amant de lady Chatterley (1928), est né le 11 septembre 1885 à Eastwood (Nottinghamshire, Royaume-Uni). Sa réputation de chantre de la sexualité et le parfum de scandale qui s'attache à son nom ont un peu occulté la richesse d'une oeuvre qui inclut romans, nouvelles, poésie, essais, récits de voyage, théâtre, peinture, sans compter des milliers de lettres et un manuel d'histoire. Il meurt le 2 mars 1930 à Vence (Alpes-Maritimes).
